A newly appointed Vice-President approached us for coaching. He had been with the company for several years, but was new to the executive ranks of the organization. He wasn't sure how to act in his new role. He wasn't sure he understood the "rules" of the game for members of the senior team. He asked for our help.
We spent 6-weeks working with this person. During our coaching session, it became obvious that he had these doubts because he didn't trust his own talents. We worked with him to show him that he got the promotion because of his ability to "get things done".
Over time, we encouraged him to become broader in his thinking. As a senior executive, he was expected to offer opinions about subjects that he, perhaps, had only a general knowledge of. He learned by doing.
